Everything is Amazing, No One is Happy; Humor Appropriate for an Emotional Thanksgiving

Emotional two days spent with CNN learning about the terror attacks in Mumbai. No less lighter, but much more uplifting were theĀ  CNN Hero awards, which I hope becomes an annual event.

Watching Louis C.K. talk about technical progress and the grating air of entitlement that comes with customer service culture was especially funny today.

Eleni Mandell – I Want to Be Your Afternoon

I want to be your all day too, but if I had to choose, I’d be your afternoon. Testing custom sizes for YouTube rendering. While I’m doing so, listen to this.

Kiloblog Volume

I’ve decided to return to the original idea for kiloblog, which was that is it is a stream of consciousness blog, where I wrote what I was thinking, and sorted it out later. It is a place where I can be personal.

If you were following this blog because I wrote about some programming project that piqued your interest, you can read more about it, and in more detail at Alan’s Blogometer.

You will find a lot of talk about software development in this blog. You may follow it for a while and think that it is a programmers journal. That is because I will go on a software binge, muddle my head with thoughts about software, and offload them constantly.

Then, without any warning, I’ll be writing about some deep personal failing and it’s repercussions. Don’t worry. I’ve not snapped. It was merely a context switch, one that wouldn’t seem so odd if you were not expecting another soliloquy on Java serialization.

Disaster

I’m reading Disaster: Hurricane Katrina and the Failure or Homeland Security. This is what I’ve done when I’ve not been sleeping. Stories of incompetence. Stories of unrecognized ingenuity. There is a feeling that I need to be doing something to commemorate Katrina, but I’m quite tired of being around people. I don’t feel like changing my web sites to include some graphic. It seems hollow. I don’t feel that we can have a one year anniversary, any more than we could have had a one week anniversary. The CSO was announced yesterday. They are moving forward while we mourn.

Decaffeinated

Especially since the Rising Tide Conference, I’ve been depressed. About as depressed as I used to get in Ann Arbor. I have been sleeping a lot. Slept all day yesterday. Other that going out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I’ve been sleeping and reading Disaster: Hurricane Katrina and the Failure or Homeland Security. To justify the sleeping, I’ve told myself that I’m going to give up coffee, and that naturally, I’m going to be tired. This is an old pantomime, one that ends when I realize that I’m not going to function until I caffeinated. I’m drinking coffee now.

No Expectations

Historically, I have had a knack for attracting withering disapproval. Today, I’m finding that the trick to avoiding it, when I’ve discovered a source, it to not allow the source any social expectations. No expectations, no disapproval. It is nice to live a life where there are so many good people to which I am beholden, they serve to displace toxins.

What a Difference a Theme Makes

I’m not inclined to write in the Think New Orleans blog these days. I don’t like the theme. It’s not as nice as the look of the New Orleans Wiki. What a difference a theme makes. I do need to practice what I preach, and frequently update Think New Orleans.

I am lost without a goal.

What is the goal of the Think New Orleans weblog? Do I want to write about neighborhood planning? I spend so much time on that matter, it seems like a place to put it. Do I want to write news from the neighborhoods?

I’ve focused on using the Think New Orleans blog to organize Think New Orleans. This has been the place where I’ve reached out to people, posted questions and sought advice. I’ve written about my take on what goes on in New Orleans, and I’ve written my take on information systems and civics.

It seems that Think New Orleans should focus on promoting New Orleans information systems.

Need to fix that theme. It’s a battered Kubrick. It will encourage me to write more.

Somehow, I feel that all people need a high-volume weblog somewhere, where they can post whatever, get the writing out of there system, and tighten it up later. That’s what the Kiloblog is about. Maybe I’ll go and scratch out some pleadings there.
